Roading and Binders

Uroxsys displayed its formulating versatility by applying our core technology to the road surfacing industry and has shown again that our culture of innovation can bring original solutions to the table. The ‘lowest cost option’ attitude is steadily being replaced by lowest environmental impact and cradle-to-grave outlay. With this, the concept of ‘making it last longer’ comes into play which is where Uroxsys thrives.

This is a current focus area for the Uroxsys development team with a lens on sustainability and bio-sourced materials.

Roading

Epoxy Modified Bitumen for use with Epoxy Modified Open Grade Asphalt

Open Grade Porous Asphalt (OGPA) has been shown to both improve safety by allowing surface water to drain through the road surface - as well as reducing road noise. However, oxidation occurring right through this surfacing type causes it to embrittle and disintegrate prematurely. A major project conducted by various OECD countries - including New Zealand, scoped options for long life road surfacing and concluded that epoxy modification of bitumen gave a significant improvement in the lifespan of a road surface. This led to the development of Epoxy Modified Open Grade Aspalt (EMOGPA) with the epoxy modification effectively countering the bitumen oxidation.

In the New Zealand market, the epoxy addition has been set relatively low to enable cost viability on large projects. Uroxsys was able to develop a bespoke product that passed the required standards but also offered a very user-friendly experience in terms of handling and laying characteristics. We also focused heavily on ensuring our formulation rapidly cures in ambient conditions. EMOPGA is specified for sections of New Zealand's ‘Roads of National Significance’ projects, and our product can be used in an

EMOGPA system conforming to NZTA P11E. We have partnered with one of the ‘big three’ New Zealand roading contractors to deliver this exceptional product. Contact us for information on availability.

Bondurox Roadpatch

This unique 1K PU product doubles as a long-lasting pothole repair binder, as well as a general road repair resin.

For pothole repair, Roadpatch is simply mixed with grade 6 aggregate and tamped into a dry pothole that has been primed with binder. The product rapidly cures via a reaction with moisture, and the controlled foaming fills the voids between the aggregate. Trafficking can generally occur within 15-30 minutes. The high modulus binder forms a long-term structural repair that is resistant to the compaction and edge fretting that leads to the formation of a new pothole.

For common roading damage such as ‘alligator cracking’ - where the road surface has broken into segments, Roadpatch can be applied directly to the dry surface and worked in to the cracks using a squeegee or broom. It rapidly reacts with moisture forming a long-lasting structural repair – effectively gluing the road back together and waterproofing in one step. The repair stops substate fines being pumped out halting the process the caused the problem initially.

Roading Emulsion Technology

In development

We have formulated and are currently assessing a range of innovative urethane modifications to bitumen for surfacing applications. These are emulsified with bitumen and react post-emulsification enabling an elevated level of modification that can’t be achieved using conventional technology. Properties that can be achieved include dramatically improved low temperature flexibility: down to –18C, coupled with a far higher melting temperature, which will ensure an extended surfacing lifespan. Our technology can be created with bio sourced raw materials. These emulsions can be blended at high solids, have excellent storage stability and phase invert like a standard emulsion giving rapid drying times, along with excellent aggregate adhesion.

This development reflects our attitude that a higher up-front investment, is justified for reduced year-on-year costs and a lower environmental impact.

Long Life Asphalt

In development

This couples with the Urethane technology used in our bitumen emulsions and imparts the same performance improvements – far greater low temperature flexibility and higher melt temperature without altering the laying properties. Again, the raw materials used can be sourced from biomass.
